Hemp oil for anxiety

Hemp oil for anxiety: does it work?

Cannabidiol (CBD) – the most known non-psychoactive chemical compound present in hemp oil, has gained recognition for its long list of potential medicinal benefits

Research and customer reviews also show that symptoms of anxiety can be relieved using hemp oil.

A large amount of CBD’s limelight may be attributed to the non-psychoactive aspects of the drug. Non-psychoactive properties mean that customers do not get “high” from CBD.

Mind-altering symptoms, which are common to THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol), does not occur from ingestion of CBD. No type or dosage of CBD can result in euphoria associated with the “high” that consumers get after using marijuana.

Clinical and preclinical trials have demonstrated that hemp oil can benefit those with anxiety, or help relieve the sense of discomfort that we encounter when faced with chronic or acute stressors.

Anxiety can vary from moderate to entirely outrageous, and CBD has been shown to perform an anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) role in the body, especially in the form of full-spectrum hemp oil, which offers additional benefits associated with the entourage effect.

What is Hemp Oil?

Hemp oil refers to full-spectrum hemp oil, which is extracted from hemp flowers and contains CBD and all full-spectrum of other cannabinoids, terpenes naturally formed in the hemp plants.

Beware that it is not the same as hemp seed oil, which does not contain CBD or other cannabinoids!

Full-spectrum CBD products contain high concentrations of CBD (and/or CBDa). However, as the name hints, it contains all other naturally formed cannabinoids in the hemp plant, such as CBGA, CBG, CBN, and the list goes on.

Usually, these other cannabinoids come in lower concentrations, but what makes them so special is the synergy cannabinoids have with each other – the effect so-called “entourage effect” – the full-spectrum of cannabinoids, essential oils, and terpenes extracted from the plant works synergistically and enhances each cannabinoid’s remedial effect.

To put it more simply, full-spectrum hemp oil is more potent and has a better medical value, because of all cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids working together and creating stronger medicinal effects.

Previous studies falsely showed that the Isolated CBD form was more effective than the Full spectrum CBD; however, in 2005, this theory was proven false by research conducted by the Lautenberg Center for General Tumor Immunology in Jerusalem. Another study showed that the full-spectrum CBD resulted in higher relief levels compared to the Isolate CBD.

Lab reports prove that our (Sativum) full-spectrum CBD oil is plentiful of minor cannabinoids and terpenes, which makes us a trustable company you can choose to buy your CBD products.

Is Full-Spectrum Hemp Oil Better Than CBD Isolate?

Researchers in a 2015 analysis at the Hadassah School of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem concluded that full-spectrum CBD extract was more effective than CBD isolate in the treatment of inflammation.

This hypothesis was based on the view that other cannabinoids and compounds in full-spectrum hemp extract synergized with CBD to alleviate inflammation at a higher degree than CBD isolates. The researchers referred to this phenomenon as “The Entourage Effect.”

What Is Anxiety?

According to the Mayo Clinic, people with anxiety feel an extreme and constant concern or apprehension for daily circumstances. While there is a wide range of anxiety disorders, they all have a typical quality: repeated episodes of sudden fear or horror that can peak within minutes described as panic attacks.

Sounds familiar?

There are 40 million Americans – about 18% – who have an anxiety disorder, according to the Anxiety and Depression Organization of America. While Europe is in a better situation, the anxiety is still affecting a whopping 13.6% of Europeans.

Safety, fitness, and finance are consistently ranked among the highest causes of anxiety.

Common Anxiety Symptoms

Anxiety manifests itself differently to all, but typical signs include:

  • Feeling anxious or impatient or tense.
  • Feeling a sense of risk, fear, or catastrophe.
  • Breaking or sweating
  • Increase in heart rate.
  • Light-headedness.
  • Nausea.
  • Fast Breathing (hyperventilation).
  • Struggling to handle the worrying.
  • Avoiding circumstances that cause distress.
  • Difficulty to sleep.
  • Gastrointestinal disorders.

Does Hemp Oil Relieve Anxiety?

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is the primary active compound present in the full-spectrum hemp oil. It is one of the many cannabinoids produced by the cannabis plant.

Studies have shown that CBD performs a wide variety of therapeutic functions in the body, including as an anxiolytic, analgesic, antidepressant, antipsychotic, neuroprotective, neurogenic, anticonvulsant, antiemetic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic, and antineoplastic or antitumor agent. Yeah, the list is long!

Its potential therapeutic properties are promising for the treatment of anxiety. The pros of using hemp oil for anxiety is its safety profile. It could be a great alternative to antidepressants due to its lack of side effects and safety for long-term usage.

While researchers are still trying to understand the precise effects of the hemp plant, various clinical trials and customer testimonials indicate that CBD is helping people to relieve anxiety and anxious thoughts!

One research published in 2011 demonstrated great potential in CBD to serve as an anti-anxiety drug. A few hundred participants with a social anxiety disorder (SAD) were asked to talk in front of a vast crowd.

Half of the participants got CBD, and the other half received a placebo.

This was a “blind” procedure, so the survey respondents were unaware of what they had been given.

After the delivery of the speech, researchers compared the anxiety levels of those who had taken CBD to those who took the so-called “sugar pill”.

The findings revealed that individuals who took CBD reported considerably less anxiety compared to those who got the placebo.

In comparison, the researchers noted that “CBD significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort in speech performance.” The placebo group indicated that they had higher speech problems due to high anxiety and discomfort.

Accumulation of data from scientific trials and customer feedback suggests that CBD contains strong anti-anxiety properties. It is beneficial that those looking to try CBD to relieve anxiety can take hemp oil as anxiety arises.

As CBD starts to work immediately or in a matter of minutes, depending on the method of consumption, it is a good remedy to alleviate anxiety on the spot. It also appears to be a perfectly safe option, with little to no side effects.

CBD can also reduce cortisol - the stress hormone!

One research of 11 healthy individuals found that CBD doses of 300mg dramatically reduced the plasma stress hormone – cortisol, levels, and that doses of 600mg were associated with an even more significant decrease in cortisol.

You might wonder what is cortisol and what does it do?

Cortisol is a stress hormone. It is released by the brain in response to stress-inducing situations.

While cortisol is needed to react to stressful situations in life, high levels of it for too long can seriously disbalance your organism.

Higher levels of cortisol in the bloodstream have been associated with several harmful health effects, including anxiety, depression, hyperglycemia, reduced bone mass, decreased muscle tissue, weakness, nausea, digestive disorders, and low energy levels. If the cortisol levels are high for a prolonged time, it can disturb your body’s natural processes.

Therefore, the role of CBD in lowering cortisol levels would mediate the ability of cortisol to cause anxiety or other disorders in our bodies.

Natural tips to lower cortisol levels:

  • Get enough sleep – 7-9 hours a day is a recommended sleep time for adults.
  • Laugh more often – laughing has been shown to decrease cortisol levels.
  • Practice empathy and mindfulnessa study showed that it helps to normalize cortisol levels.
  • Take care of something that is of value to you – Family, friends, plants, animals,…
  • Eat a healthy diet – mostly whole, unprocessed foods, avoid added sugar.
  • Take supplements – hemp (CBD) products, ashwagandha, vitamins, probiotics.

How to use hemp products for anxiety?

There are many different hemp products, including CBD hemp oil (tinctures), CBD capsules, CBD edibles, hemp (CBD) flowers. We will overview these methods of CBD usage below:

Hemp oil (tincture)

It is the most popular CBD consumption method. Hemp oil is dropped under the tongue and is held there for 30-60s before swallowing. The method so-called the “sublingual”.

Pros: healthy, exact dosage, contains vitamins, easy to use.

Cons: mirror needed to drop oil under the tongue or the help of another person.

CBD capsules (pills)

Tasteless usage of hemp oil. While many people love it, some people dislike the harshness of it and rather choose CBD pills to avoid taste.

Pros: easy to dose, tasteless (suitable for people who don’t like hemp taste).

Cons: bioavailability is lower than with oil because of some CBD being destroyed by stomach acid.

CBD edibles

A fun and tasty way to consume CBD. Think – CBD gummies, CBD lozenges, or CBD cakes.

Pros: a fun way to dose CBD, tasty, exact dosage, kids friendly (because of taste and fun of usage!)

Cons: Usually CBD edibles are made from CBD isolate which is less effective, increases calorie intake.

Hemp flowers (CBD buds)

A rather new way of consuming CBD is using CBD flowers – which have unique authentic flavors depending on the strain. However, it contains no more than 0.2% THC, so does not induce “the high”.

Hemp flowers are an effective way to relieve anxiety because when smoking or vaporizing them, CBD starts to work immediately

Therefore it makes a great remedy to treat anxiety as it can be taken for instant results.

Pros: Various strains are available, with unique cannabinoid and terpene profiles, instant effect

Cons: heavy on lungs if smoked (recommended to vaporize to minimize damage and increase flavor – because of the regulated temperature of the vaporizer terpenes (link!) evaporate at different temperatures and has more flavor this way).

Tip: acti tubes can be used to filter the C02 (harmful for your lungs).

Also, you can use CBD flowers to make your own CBD infused edibles. It is a healthier option.

How Does Hemp Oil Relieve Anxiety?

Without getting too complicated, we’ll explain how CBD affects the human body after use. Hemp’s active compound, Cannabidiol(CBD), performs a variety of processes in the brain which might explain why it could be useful in managing anxiety and other conditions.

Via serotonin signaling

CBD has the potential to help manage anxiety due to the way it interacts with processes in the human body. CBD can improve serotonin signaling via receptors in the same way as an antidepressant drug – SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor).

SSRI drugs, such as Zoloft, Prozac, are only available by prescription. Keep in mind that SSRI (as well as SNRI) drugs take a long time to give results. They work by building new serotonin pathways in the brain and increasing the levels of serotonin. However, that takes from 4 to 6 weeks on average. Hence, they are not suitable for the usage to calm anxiety immediately – “on the spot”.

On top of that, positive results of SSRI’s might be outweighed by the harsh side effects, which are rather common.

By improving serotonin signaling, CBD can allow the brain to produce more serotonin, similarly to SSRI’s, but with less or none side effects.

Serotonin is a brain neurotransmitter that has a variety of roles, such as comprehension, memory, awareness, along with several other physiological processes. In addition to these features, it has a famous appearance that leads to feelings of well-being and satisfaction.

Via endocannabinoid system (ECS)

Another way hemp (CBD) can help with anxiety is by working on the endocannabinoid system (ECS), an integral body system that helps sustain balance (homeostasis) in the body. Homeostasis is the body’s desire to preserve internal equilibrium – to keep harmony.

ECS is responsible for mood, sleep, appetite, memory, and reproduction, and to make sure all these vital processes work smoothly in the body.

If your body receives some kind of stress from the outside, such as a scratch, resulting in pain, ECS will help your body to deal with it and to return to normal processes.

When CBD is ingested, it interacts with CB1 and CB2, two influential receptors of the endocannabinoid system related to mood and brain activity.

By balancing out the internal processes, including mood and sleep, hemp oil can relieve anxiety and improve the overall quality of life.

By neurogenesis

Sound complex! What is that?

Neurogenesis is characterized as the growth and production of nervous tissue.

Studies indicated that CBD has the potential to facilitate neurogenesis. This means that CBD can build and restore neuronal pathways in the brain.

More importantly, it has demonstrated that it could cause neurogenesis in the hippocampus, the part of the brain responsible for memory, feeling, and portions of the nervous system. All of these reasons could help explain why discomfort is decreased when CBD products are ingested. The efficiency of CBD as an anti-anxiety remedy was demonstrated in a study conducted by Brazilian researchers:

In this study, a small group of patients with generalized social anxiety obtained CBD.

Following intake, the participants registered a substantial decrease in anxiety. These arguments were confirmed when researchers conducted brain scans on subjects that showed improved cortical blood flow patterns associated with anti-anxiety effects.

Interesting fact:

Researchers are also looking at how hemp plants, with their active compound – CBD, can help with conditions such as panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), social phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and depression.

CBD Oil Dosage for Anxiety

To be honest with you, there is no universal CBD dosage for anxiety. CBD affects everyone differently and same CBD dosages can and probably will affect two persons differently.

But, what CBD oil dosage to take then?

What CBD oil dosages you need to tackle your anxiety will depend upon a person’s organism.

The best technique is to start with low doses of CBD oil and then gradually increase them until you reach your own most efficient personal dose to relieve anxiety.

A 2017 review indicates, a lot of testing has shown that this is a reasonably secure therapy.

The research reviewed in that study did not indicate that there is one universal dosage of CBD oil (hemp oil) that everybody can take.

Instead, it highlighted the fact that different individuals (and, in animal experiments, different animals) respond differently to the same doses of CBD. Many human trials use doses between 20 and 1500 milligrams a day. Of course, huge doses are given to truly see the difference in the data.

The amount of CBD you need to consume depends on a multiple of variables, including body weight, cannabinoid tolerance, the disease that you are handling and many more.

In other words, several factors should be looked upon to determine how much CBD to take.

Tip: you can keep the track of how much CBD you are taking, and if your symptoms are getting better. You can write it down on your phone or on a piece of paper. You can also write down and see which dosages work best with your anxiety.

Keep in mind that cannabinoids build up in your body, and it happens at varying times – depending upon a person. So some people might start feeling hemp oil effects faster than the others. It all depends on the person. The best thing to do is to take CBD for at least 2 weeks and then see if it helps with the condition.

Natural tips to manage anxiety:

Exercise. Pick up a sport of your liking. Some people prefer yoga because of its relaxed attitude, while others enjoy running. Whatever you like, make sure to sweat at least twice a week!

Eat a healthy diet – eat mostly whole foods – vegetables, fruits, nuts, and other unprocessed foods. Try to limit or avoid saturated fats and added sugars.

Meditate – when was the last time your mind was still? Meditation can help observe thoughts and learn how to manage them. After all, meditation is just an observation of your thoughts – understanding their patterns and useless anxieties!

Plan ahead – Having a clear plan for your days ahead can help reduce anxiety, as it often comes from uncertainty.

Understand where it is coming from – Understanding the cause of anxiety and dealing with the root cause can help relieve it.

Notice the patterns and learn how to deal with them – you can observe the repeating patterns of anxiety. Does it wake you up early in the morning? Maybe it does not let you sleep? Learning patterns and coping with them can help curb anxiety.

Remove obstacles that cause anxiety – make a list of what causes anxiety and see if you can eliminate a few things off the list.

It might be skipped taxes or utility bills. Or maybe a book that you forgot to give back to your friend?

Whatever it is, take responsibility for the things that have to be done. It will remove the vicious cycle of “I had to do it, but now I am late anyway, so why not postpone it even more”!

Take CBD – there are various CBD techniques and hemp products to use for anxiety. To find your own personal favorite product, to manage the anxiety, you will need to try a few different hemp products. However, it is totally worth it!

We recommend starting with hemp oil and finding an exact CBD dosage you like. From here you can start experimenting with different hemp products as now you know your suitable personal CBD dosage.

Have a gratitude journal – write what you are grateful for each day. With this method, you learn your mind to concentrate on the positive rather than the negative.

Do not postpone important things – it will only make anxiety worse. Deal with anxious things now, so the “waiting to do it” habit does not make your anxiety worse.

Does CBD have any side effects?

The hemp plant was used for thousands of years. CBD in hemp, and other cannabinoids, terpenes does not seem to cause harsh side effects. And if they appear, they are usually pretty mild and include dizziness, fatigue, diarrhea, sleepiness.

Be aware, if you are allergic to pollen, as cannabis extracts and CBD flowers contain pollen and it might cause an allergic reaction.

Also, be cautious that CBD may interact with currently taken drugs.

CBD can slow down the metabolization of some medications.

To understand CBD and drug interactions – contact your doctor, as drug mixing is a common thing done in medicine.

CBD rarely has side effects by itself and if they do occur, they are usually mild. If you are a beginner, just start with lower hemp oil doses at first.

Hemp products are becoming legal in more countries every year.

Usually, the limit of THC is set when legalizing the hemp plant.

In the US hemp (CBD) products are legal nationwide with a THC limit of 0.3%.

In the EU hemp products are mostly legal in all countries. The EU law states the 0.2% THC limit, but it may vary per country.

Switzerland has set the 1% THC limit for all hemp products.

Australia allows hemp oil if it contains no more than 2% of other cannabinoids, excluding CBD, which is usually the case with hemp oil.

Many more countries, not mentioned above, also allow hemp products. However, it is recommended to check your local authority laws before purchasing CBD.

Hemp oil can be a great addition to a lifestyle to alleviate anxiety or other psychologically draining conditions.

To get the maximum effects of hemp oil for anxiety, use full-spectrum hemp oils to benefit from the “entourage effect” – where cannabinoids “help” each other work more potently.

The healthiest way to use CBD is to use it as Full-spectrum hemp oil. Just drop it under your tongue and swallow the remaining after 30-60sec.

The fastest way to consume CBD for instant results to relieve anxiety is CBD flowers. It can be a very useful addition to your household if you want to end anxiety on the spot!

Just remember that there is not a “universal dosage” that suits everyone. To find a dosage – start slow and build it up gradually until you find the best personal dosage of hemp oil for anxiety. Or another CBD product of your liking.
